In my understanding, Priests, through their ordination, are acting in the place of Christ…from the Catechism: If you hear of the Sacrament of Penance or the Sacrament of Reconciliation they are referring to confession. The Sacrament of Confession is also known as Penance or Reconciliation. For this, we need God’s abundant grace through the Eucharist, prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. The hard part is actually amending our life so that we do not commit these sins again. Believe it or not, going to confession is the easy part. You then leave and as soon as possible complete the penance the priest has assigned to you.Ĭonfession is one part of the sacrament of Penance & Reconciliation completing your penance is the other part.The priest may then say, “God has forgiven your sins.I absolve you from your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Through the ministry of the Church, may God give you pardon and peace. God the Father of mercies, through the death and resurrection of His Son, has reconciled the world to Himself and sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins. The priest then prays the prayer of absolution (forgiveness):.Our Savior, Jesus Christ, suffered and died for us. I firmly intend, with the help of Your grace, to sin no more and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. In choosing to do wrong and failing to good, I have sinned against You, whom I should love above all things. My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. A commonly used Act of Contrition is the following: There are no required words, although you need to include that you are sorry and that you will amend your life. The priest then invites you (the penitent) to make an Act of Contrition.“For your penance, please pray 2 Hail Marys). The priest will give you an appropriate penance (e.g.The priest may ask you questions and/or offer you counsel.Venial Sins – these are less serious and do not require confession, but confessing venial sins is a good practice.There are three conditions for a mortal sin. Mortal Sins – these are more serious and must be confessed.You then list the kind and number of your sins (e.g.My last confession was _ days/months/years ago and these are my sins.”
A simple formula can get you going: “Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned.You will probably grow to love this sacrament if you don’t already! In the Confessional Don’t let this sense of shame deter you! It is natural to feel that way but once you’ve done it a few times you will begin to feel more at ease and confident going in. Many people are afraid or embarrassed to go to confession.
You can either kneel behind a screen or sit in a chair facing the priest. When it is your turn, enter the reconciliation room.

Feel free to take your time to pray before going in. Other times there will be no line at all. Sometimes there may be a long line that will give you ample time to pray and reflect. Once you arrive at church, take a few minutes to pray, asking the Holy Spirit to help you make a good confession. Writing your sins on a piece of paper before you go can help you during your confession. An honest, humble, and thorough examination of conscience helps you to prepare for the sacrament. Much of the work for a good celebration of a sacrament takes place prior to arriving at church. Knowing what to do in confession will make the process much easier. Regularly going to confession is a way to grow in holiness. Confessing your sins wipes the slate clean again with God and makes us stronger spiritually. Wanting to go to confession is the first step in going to confession.
